Countdown to Solo: A Star Wars Story – 7 Days – Black Series 6″ Han Solo (The Force Awakens)

Are you excited yet? One week until Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters!

In 2015, we got something I never thought we’d get: Another chance to see Harrison Ford as Han Solo on the big screen. His performance as Han in The Force Awakens was the highlight of the movie for me, and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it would be the end of Han’s journey (hey, it’s been 2.5 years. If you haven’t seen it by now, that’s not my fault).

Here’s Hasbro’s representation of Han from The Force Awakens. It might be Hasbro’s best sculpt of Harrison every. I’ve seen some repaints of this that look REALLY good.

Countdown to Solo: A Star Wars Story – 8 Days – Kenner Chewbacca Figure

Here it is. The original Chewbacca figure from Kenner.

Chewbacca was actually one of the first four figures produced in the line. In fact, Chewie was part of the famous “Early Bird” pack that Kenner sold at Christmas in 1977. Kenner didn’t have time to produce figures in time for Christmas, so they sold an empty box with a cardboard display stand and a mail-in certificate that kids could redeem for 4 action figures – Luke, Leia, R2D2, and Chewbacca. The figures shipped out to kids all over the country in the spring of 1978. (If you want to know more about the Early Bird Package, jump on over to Gus Lopez’ site THE STAR WARS COLLECTOR’S ARCHIVE).

I seem to remember going through 3 or 4 Chewie’s when I was a kid. He was all brown, and got lost easily in the grass – only to be found by the lawnmower.

This is the last Chewie I purchased when I was a kid. You can see how his arms and legs have discolored. That’s common, as the arms and legs were actually made from a different plastic than the torso was.

Countdown to Solo: A Star Wars Story – 9 Days – Han’s Lucky Dice

In 1977’s Star Wars, you can see Han’s dice hanging in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon in (I think) just one shot. When Chewie first enters the cockpit to prepare to leave Tatooine, he bumps his head on these and they swing around. Behind-the-scenes, these were added by the crew as an homage to George Lucas’ American Grafitti.

Now, 4 decades later, they’re back. First on the cover of Vanity Fair for The Force Awakens:

And they showed up again in The Last Jedi:

And, now it looks like they’ll be showing up in Solo: A Star Wars Story:

This pair of dice was a gift from my wife this past Valentine’s Day. Yeah, I know, she’s awesome. And remember, “No one’s ever really gone”…

Countdown to Solo: A Star Wars Story – 10 Days – Black Series 6″ Chewbacca

Here’s another Chewie entry. Hasbro’s 6″ Chewbacca from the Black Series.

Let’s face it: Chewie’s tough to do in an action figure. It’s tough to sculpt all of that hair. But I think this is a pretty good figure, with good articulation.

One nice thing about the Black Series figures is that they’re scaled to each other much more accurately than previous figures had been. So, this Chewie is tall like he should be.

Countdown to Solo: A Star Wars Story – 11 Days – Han Solo’s DL-44 Blaster replica (ESB Version)

This is the first replica Han Blaster I built.

It’s built on a Denix metal replica Mauser Broomhandle pistol, with a metal scope mount bracket, resin-cast accurate scope, and a metal flash supressor that I machined on the lathe. I’d like to upgrade to a bit more accurate flash suppressor, at some point.

The opposite side of the blaster has accurate detail pieces from the Revell visable V-8 engine model kit.

This blaster has a nice heft to it. It’s one of my favorite pieces.

Countdown to Solo: A Star Wars Story – 12 Days – Vintage Kenner Millennium Falcon

The Millennium Falcon. The fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.

In 1979, Kenner released this monster of a toy. At the time, it was the largest toy in the Star Wars line up. But it also had the largest price tag. I remember 1 kid in the neighborhood who actually had one.

My original Falcon from childhood is long gone. I picked this one up complete on ebay a few years ago… for about the same price I payed for my original in about 1983.

Countdown to Solo: A Star Wars Story – 15 Days – Custom “Echo Base” Han Solo vintage action figure

Another of my attempts to make custom figures, this time in 3.75″ scale. Basically, this is just a Kenner Hoth Han Solo figure with a Bespin head. I bought beater figures on ebay for a few bucks each, swapped the head, and did a repaint.

It’s interesting to me how much detail was sculpted into the classic Kenner figures that wasn’t painted.
